Wing Fest
Yesterday was the 14th annual Wing Fest held at Shelter Cove Park in Hilton Head. Our church provides volunteers to staff some of the booths at the event. I have been coordinating the volunteers for the events this year. It was fun yesterday, but it was quite cool and very windy. It took a while to warm up after I got home! There were so many people - probably at least 5,000.
The guy in the top picture, Rob, is from our church and was working in the same booth as me. I didn't realize until I saw this picture that he looks so much like Ronny. Don't you think so?

Quick drawing of William
I've posted this photo before - it was taken of Will at Disneyland on 12/13/2000 - when he was six months old. I love the original picture and thought I'd give it a try.
I am thankful for creative outlet that drawing is providing me. It allows me to release some of the negative/stressful energy I have from my day. Today was a doozie (sp?) so this was a good way to let off some steam. Perhaps a punching bag would work, too!!

Thinking About Grandpa
Tomorrow marks the 7th anniversary of Grandpa Gordon's death. I miss him. I was looking for a picture so I could draw him and I found one of my favorites of Grandma & Grandpa. What's strange is that it was taken on March 16th, 1986. I figured that was the one I was meant to draw! I also found an older one of the two of them - it was taken on February 3, 1976. I think I've gotten better since the first time I tried to draw them!!!! But, I think Grandma ended up looking more like Aunt Ina than herself. Oh, well...I'm trying!
On my desk I have the 'Work is just something I do between fishing trips.' cup. It reminds me of Dad and Grandpa. When I was in CA in July I went with Dad to see Grandma. He was asking Chris if he left that cup there - he wanted it back because it was his Dad's cup and it was important to him to have it. That's how I felt when I saw that cup - it was the last cup he used. I am very thankful that I have that cup and I will take good care of it and treasure it!

Into Johnny Cash
For some reason, I've been very into Johnny Cash all of a sudden. About a year or so ago I got Tom The Legend of Johnny Cash CD - I've been playing it for the past 2 weeks. Will's gotten into it as well. He loves 'Get Rythym...When You Get The Blues' and, of course, 'A Boy Named Sue' (here's a link on You Tube for the song -(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M89c3hWx3RQ). I enjoy looking at Will in the rear view mirror while he is singing along with the music - it's fun to watch him having a good time. I remember listening to that song when I was little, too. I seem to remember that Dad liked him.
Anyway, after watching 'Walk The Line' again today I decided to try to draw him - didn't quite get him, but that's the way it goes!

A Meditation for the Children
Tom read this last week for the meditation at church. It's by Gary Kowalski and I think it was very appropriate for what was going on last week. Wanted to share it with you all.
We pray for the children,
For the voicless, for the innocent, for the vulnerable, for the least powerful among us, and those most in need of our protection.
We pray for the children,
Who depend on adults to make their world safe, to create networks of care and learning, and to provide the schools and doctors and counselors and teachers that support them in their growth.
We pray for the children,
Who do not understand partisan politics, who are not registered to vote, who are not interested in debating points, but who have a very deep interest in clean air and pure water and a world without war.
We pray for the children,
Who trust their elders to exercise wisdom, to act responsibly, but who are so often disappointed and betrayed in that trust.
We pray for the children,
Who are satisfied with so litte -- a warm blanket, a roof overhead, a good pair of sneakers -- but who often lack even the barest of necessities.
We pray for the children,
For the ones on honor rolls and the ones on drugs, for the well-adjusted and those who have been battered and traumatized by life.
We pray for the children,
For those tormented by bullies at school and for the bullies themselves, tormented by demons we connot even imagine.
We pray for the children,
For girls and boys who see far too much sex and violence on TV and are assaulted and seduced with unhealthy images of femininity and masculinity.
We pray for the children,
Who remind us of all that is tender and playful in ourselves, and of our own capacity for laughter and for love.
We pray for the children,
Who contain all the promise of generations to come and all the possibilities of tomorrow.
Help us, we pray, to be the guardians and advocates of all children everywhere, with eyes to see that all are children of God.
Amen.
Garry Kowalski

A Quick Drawing Of Will
I love this Face! He was going through his facial expression experimental phase. Ronny called it the Gruder Face! His preschool teacher wondered if there was a problem because she would be reading a story and he would give her some of the fiercest faces! He would practice in the mirror, too! Anyway, I tried to capture the irritation on his face, but I'm finding that it's hard to do! Oh well!
